The year 1965 marked a turning point in John Coltranes life. It was at this point that he crossed the threshold into free jazz, a genre he had been exploring since the early 1960s. Apart from his landmark album *Ascension*, no other album illustrates this better than the impressive *Meditations*. Coltranes regular quartetMcCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums)is joined here by a second drummer, Rashied Ali (who took over for Jones after this album), and saxophonist Pharoah Sanders.
The album *Meditations*, released in 1966 on Impulse! Records, captured John Coltrane during a period of transition. On the one hand, it contained the last recordings the saxophonist made with the full lineup of his legendary quartet. On the other hand, the album also introduced new musical collaboratorstenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and second drummer Rashied Aliwho would go on to help shape Coltranes final creative phase. In this suite-like program, the music flows as a continuous meditation on transcendence and collective expression. Meditations elevates Coltranes spiritual jazz to higher realms of energy and abstraction. The album, often referred to as the spiritual successor to A Love Supreme, remains a powerful testament to transformation, intensity, and devotion within Coltranes musical legacy.
